1987 Tolkien Calendar - Unwin Paperbacks

1987. Unwin Paperbacks. The Tolkien Calendar 1987. ISBN: 0-04-529010-5. 13 5/8 x 15. Spiral bound with a loop for hanging. Artwork by Roger Garland, John Howe, Ted Nasmith and Alan Lee. In this calendar first appears the work of the illustrator John Howe, perhaps the greatest illustrator of Tolkien's work. Although others have certainly done illustrations of great merit, John Howe's work is active and dynamic; heros and evil characters look the part without appearing cartoon-like. It is unfortunate that only three illustrations by John Howe appear in the calendar. Who can read the part about the Mouth of Sauron without recalling this image of John Howe? Alan Lee also produced some images for this calendar. Although Alan lee has great artistic skill, his imagery is just too faint and misty. I want to see something! Ted Nasmith is the best landscape painter of all the illustrators who have contributed to the calendars. He cannot draw human forms. In particular, the hobbits look like small, prune-faced old men.

THE SWORD OF EOWYN

A very high quality, beautiful sword. This would make a great decorative gift for the shield maiden in your life, or someone who just loves equestrian design.

LORD OF THE RINGS JEWELRY

Now that the movies have largely run their merchandising course, this may be the best time to purchase high quality jewelry at discounted prices. Use these as gifts for years to come.

LORD OF THE RINGS GAMES!

It appears that any game that could possibly have a Lord of the Rings theme has been produced. These include Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Backgammon and Dominoes.

LORD OF THE RINGS FIGURES

Figures from the movies include a large action figure series. There are separate figure sets and color schemes for each movie. The highest quality figures were made by Sideshow WETA. Although these are expensive, they sell out quickly and will likely keep their values.
